Ear

Many take their hearing for granted, forgetting that the ear is a delicate ecosystem made up of many parts…

Hearing loss can potentially affect people of any age, and with one in six adults having some degree of hearing loss or difficulty, it is safe to say it is a common condition throughout Australia.

The ear is composed of many parts, and we are able to hear sounds thanks to the ear canal, which acts as a channel to move the sound vibrations received from the eardrum to the inner ear or ‘cochlea’ where these vibrations are converted to electrical signals. These signals then travel to the brain along the auditory nerve where we are able to convert them into sound.

When should I seek an ear, nose and throat specialist?

If you have sudden hearing loss you should seek advice urgently (within a day or two) as typically treatment should be started as soon as possible. It is also important to seek medical advice if you lose hearing in just one ear or you notice a gradual deterioration of hearing.
