Tinnitus

Tinnitus is the condition where a patient hears noises or constant ‘ringing’ in their ears and heads…

This noise is usually drowned out by environmental sounds however once it becomes more noticeable in everyday life it can become irritating or even painful. When this occurs, it is referred to as tinnitus and can cause low frequency to high frequency pitched noise – generally this condition is sporadic and temporary however there have been cases where tinnitus has been permanent. It is important that hearing songs, words or voices is not included in the definition of tinnitus.

When to seek an ENT Specialist…

At ENT Surgeons of Melbourne, we examine cases of tinnitus that are prolonged, affect only one ear or are combined with other symptoms such as pain. We will generally run hearing tests, blood tests and scans in order to pinpoint the cause of your tinnitus; very rarely it will be due to a more serious condition such as a tumour of the auditory nerve.

How we will treat your tinnitus…

In order to control your symptoms, we will utilise mechanical devices for example hearing aids after first giving you some counselling on what your tinnitus is and how we will treat it. In general, medication treatment is not very helpful in relieving symptoms of tinnitus, and with a detailed consultation with one of our professional ENT surgeons, we can recommend the best possible treatment.
